Happy Summer to you all!  In celebration, here’s a sunny new music playlist inspired by the season.  Best enjoyed on a hammock with a cool drink and some shades.

Pretty Lights vs. Summertime” – Various Artists FREE DOWNLOAD HERE
Electronic artist and producer Derek Vincent Smith, known as Pretty Lights, has delivered a killer mix, sampling 8 different summer jams. From Nina Simone, to Sublime, to Will Smith, this pretty much covers anything and everything you could want for your summer soundtrack, all in one hot little 5 minute package. Well played Mr. Smith…well played.

“Hits Me Like A Rock (Dillon Francis Remix)” – CSS
Yes! They are back. Brazilian new-wave electro poppers CSS, aka Cansei de Ser Sexy are back with a new single. While I love the original “Hits Me Like A Rock,” Dillon Francis’s take on their latest is like a sunbeam, illuminating the song with a newfound sparkle worthy of this summer playlist. You can look forward to the full release of their upcoming album La Liberacion on August 29th.

“How Small We Are” – Pollyn

Pollyn “How Small We Are” from Pollyn on Vimeo.

L.A.’s own new wave/funk trio Pollyn are definitely a band to look out for. I’m completely gaga for their latest Talking Heads-inspired single, a major departure for a band once labeled “down-tempo”. Looking forward to hearing the rest of their upcoming sophomore release Living In Patterns.

“Summer Bum” – Bumblebeez
Nothing says summer more than Bumblebeez. Okay, so this isn’t brand-spanking new, but it’s definitely fitting for the season. And it always makes me dance – “All you ladies pop that thang like this…” You know you want to.

“Saturday Love” – Toro Y Moi FREE DOWNLOAD
Sip your drink of choice while savoring the chillwave sounds of Toro Y Moi’s latest release, “Saturday Love”, a cover of the 1985 song by Cherrelle & Alexander O’Neal. A tasteful nod to the original, and a perfectly simple sentiment: “For always and for ever, you will be my Saturday love.” Ahh, nostalgia never sounded so good.

“Sun Is Shining (Yes King Remix)” – Bob Marley
And finally, let’s slow it down with a classic. It’s simply not a summer playlist without Bob. “Sun is shining. Weather is sweet. Make you wanna move your dancing feet.” That about says it all.

Happy summer. Don’t forget your sunblock!
