Beautifully written story, Barb. I can relate. Though my children have two parents, they do not have a father. Nor do they have grandfathers on either side. I lost my dad when I was 11 and he was my greatest hero ever. I am saddened a bit that my children will not have a man in their lives to idolize in that way. But I think Madge and Lisa are correct…WE will be their heroes and they will remember US in the same way we remember our fathers. I am certain of it.

Barb: Thank you for writing this. I want to remind you too, that someday your children will long for the days when YOU got on the floor and played tickle monster or read books. These are the memories they will cherish. You are giving them these rich memories right now. And doing a stunning job of it.

Barbara, this is beautiful and I realize it saddens you that Sam has no grandfather but he will find men in his life (fathers of friends) and other people (coaches etc) who will show him the things he wants to learn to do. Also, remember he grew up with you and has nothing to miss or feel he is losing out on. This is what he knows. You know the differences but he doesn’t. And when he does you will figure out what he needs and he will tell you. You are doing so great-right now he wants for nothing I am sure. It is you that wants and misses and needs.
