Dr. Eli and Ido Bendet-Taicher are a married couple and fathers to two daughters that were born via surrogacy. The couple star in AOL’s groundbreaking docu- series ‘Connected’.
TNF: How did you start your family?
Ido: We got married in October 2007, and a year afterwards we started working on having kids. Both of our daughters were born via surrogacy; our first daughter was born in June 2010 and our second daughter was born in October 2013.
TNF: Did you always want to have kids?
Ido: We knew we wanted to have kids even before we got married. It was clear to us since we started dating in late 2003 that we want to have a family and we would just need to figure out how to have our own kids.
TNF: Where do you live?
Ido: We live in New York City.
TNF: What is the greatest (and the toughest) thing about being a parent?
Ido: The greatest thing of being a parent is to love someone unconditionally and to care for a person more than you care about yourself. Compared to the fact we had to go through so much to bring our kids to the world (surrogacy journeys are amazing, but usually long and stressful), nothing is really tough on us as parents. If we needed to pick the toughest part of being a parent, it would be the daily challenges of preparing your kids to be independent and ready for what’s out there.
TNF: Does your family feel adversity?
Ido: Not at all. We are lucky to have many friends and family who support and love us. Living in NYC is great for the LGBTQ community and in our neighborhood we feel like we are just like any other typical family.
TNF: Do you have any advice for LGBTQ youth?
Ido: The world is constantly changing and everything is temporary. Seize the moment, live the life that YOU want to live because no one is going to live it for you. Always be true to yourself and don’t be ashamed to do so!
TNF: What’s one life lesson you want to teach your children?
Ido: The world is full of people in all “Shapes & Sizes” and that’s what makes the world beautiful.
TNF: Explain how you feel in a couple sentences about the Supreme Court rules in favor of marriage equality.
Ido: We will feel amazing! It is about time that each person will be able to love, be loved and have the same rights as any other person. We are all equal!
