Spain’s State Federation of Lesbian, Gays, Transsexuals, and Bisexuals just released a video for a new campaign called, #ConLaVozBienAlta, or #WithReallyLoudVoices. It features a young gay American couple (actors) that have just arrived to Madrid, Spain, and are trying to find their hostel. Neither one of them speaks or understands Spanish. The only directions they have is a letter written in Spanish by the hostel owner– a very homophobic letter.
As any person in a foreign country might do, the couple stops and asks Spanish citizens (who don’t know they are being filmed) to help them translate the letter. The first part of the letter contained a homophobic joke, however the second half of the letter turned violent and explicitly homophobic. The hostel owner calls the men nasty names in Spanish, and says if he sees them touching, kissing, or doing any “pussy stuff,” then he will “fucking punch your face.”
The Spanish people’s reactions are exactly what one would hope for when being confronted with discrimination. One girl doesn’t seem to want to translate the violent part of the letter but just advises the men to find another hostel. Another woman can’t even finish translating the letter because of how offended she is. Three different men and one woman tell the couple to take the letter to the police so the hostel owner can be shut down or sent to jail.
By the end of the video, audiences will be moved by the intense reactions that these Spanish citizens have to helping these men get justice.
The purpose of the video and campaign is to call on people to report homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic acts to the police. The video explains that in Spain, “38% of LGBT people have felt discriminated or victimized, but only 10% have reported it.”
This video can have such an impact on communities, in Spain and all over the world. It currently has over 291K views and the number is growing. Just like the campaign name suggests, with loud voices we can end LGBT discrimination, as long as we do it together.
