The HRC has just released a wonderful video that feature fathers of trans children and teens. Last year, they released a similar video of moms discussing their trans children, however, in an effort to reach fathers and men, they created this video.
The video features four fathers that live in New York, Maine, Washington D.C., and North Carolina. Each of these dads have a trans child that range in ages. Throughout the video, the dads discuss how each of their children came out to them and the father’s own personal transition with the news.
J.R. makes a good point as to why fathers of trans children need to be represented in such a video: “Being a dad, you tend to internalize your emotions because it’s the role that you have assumed, that you have to be the rock of the family.”
“I don’t think that the father’s perspective is seen often because we’re often the second person to know. It doesn’t mean that we don’t play a huge role in how that child is raised,” added Joe.
The fathers also share their fears for their children as they grow up in terms of safety among peers, at school, or with suicide. However, each of the dads remain positive in their ability to raise healthy children in a safe and loving environment.
As Wayne explains, “This is a family transition, and that’s what it needs to be.”
