It’s official: Madonna has added to her brood (times two!). The singer announced on Instagram Wednesday that she’d recently adopted two orphaned sisters from Malawi, in a heartfelt post to her 8.7 million followers. Though their names have yet to be released, PEOPLE reports that the sisters are 4-year-old twins.
Madonna posted a sweet photo of herself walking hand-in-hand with the girls, along with the following caption:
“I can officially confirm I have completed the process of adopting twin sisters from Malawi and am overjoyed that they are now part of our family. I am deeply grateful to all those in Malawi who helped make this possible, and I ask the media please to respect our privacy during this transitional time. Thank you also to my friends, family, and my very large team for all your support and Love!”
Madonna, who’s already Mom to four other children — 20-year-old Lourdes, 16-year-old son Rocco, and 11-year-olds David and Mercy — has had deep ties to Malawi for over a decade now. The 58-year-old singer adopted David from the southeast African country in 2006, as well as Mercy the following year. She also founded the charity Raising Malawi in 2006, which helps orphans and other vulnerable children throughout the country.
Still, adopting from Malawi hasn’t always been easy for the singer. In 2013, Madonna toldHarper’s Bazaar that David’s adoption was particularly difficult, calling it “an eye opening experience” and “a real low point in my life.”
“I didn’t know that trying to adopt a child was going to land me in another sh*t storm. I was accused of kidnapping, child trafficking, using my celebrity muscle to jump ahead in the line, bribing government officials, witchcraft, you name it. I could get my head around people giving me a hard time for … publishing my Sex book, even kissing Britney Spears at an awards show, but trying to save a child’s life was not something I thought I would be punished for … In any case, I got through it. I survived.”
She certainly has. And the family she’s created clearly means the world to her. When the singer opened up to Elizabeth Banks in an interview for Billboard late last year, she declared:
“My family is everything. I will go to war for them. Whatever I’m fighting for, it’s for my daughters and my sons. I want them to have a good future.”
Best of luck to Madonna and her growing fam — those girls are definitely getting raised by one badass mama!
