New Family Social has just released a new video featuring a trans man named “Alex” (not his real name) who is an adopted father.
In the short video, Alex explains what people need to be in order to adopt — tenacious, resilient, able to laugh at themselves, and open to welcoming a young one into their lives. The purpose of the video isn’t just to encourage adoption, it’s to remind transgender persons that they can adopt.
“If you’re trans and you think you can’t adopt, think again,” he says, and adding, “The fact that you’ve come through transition and you’re now functioning in society quite happily means you’ve got a lot of resilience, a lot of tenacity and a lot of inner strength.”
“Vulnerable children need to figure out their identity and trans people have done that already.’’
The video has been released to coincide with LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week in the United Kingdom (March 6-12).
Tor Docherty, New Family Social Chief Executive said in a statement: “We’re delighted that the proportion of same-sex couples adopting in England rose to an all-time high last year.”
“But it’s vital that agencies also consider how they reach out to everyone who identifies as LGBT. We hope our latest film will help them to engage more trans people and support them through the process.”
Though the video focuses on adoption in the U.K., it’s important for United States citizens to remember that trans persons also have the right to adopt in the U.S. Check out the video below:
