It’s not easy for all parents to immediately accept or understand when their children come out as LGBT, especially when they live in cultures in which anything associated with being LGBT is largely foreign or not discussed.
In a video shared by Home is Love, we meet one such parent — a 65-year-old Taiwanese father with a lesbian daughter.
When his daughter came out to him he said, “Homosexuality is such a distant concept to us.” He couldn’t help but ask himself, “How come our daughter is a lesbian?”
However, this dad soon realized that though he wasn’t initially happy, he realized that his daughter was even far less happier than he was. “It didn’t matter that I was unhappy. But when my child was unhappy, that’s not acceptable to me,” he said.
So this father decided to learn more about the LGBT community by reading as many books or online articles as he could. He eventually realized that accepting his daughter’s sexuality wasn’t going to be found in a book (though it did help inform him on key issues!). Rather it was simpler than that.
“I read so much, I only realize now that the answer is in fact so simple. Love and acceptance,” he said.
The video shares with viewers that this Taiwanese father’s daughter is now in a stable relationship with her partner and the two have since started a family.
The video ends with the most adorable family photo and a true sense of family is family, no matter how it looks.
