Magic Johnson appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” this week and in addition to talking about business and supporting politicians, Johnson also gave advice for other parents whose children come out.
Johnson’s son EJ came out in 2013 and has been a reality star on “Rich Kids of Beverly Hills” and “EJ NYC.”
When Ellen asked Johnson if he had any advice for parents with gay kids, Johnson replied with: “I think it’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become. It’s all about loving them ― no matter who they are, what they decide to do.”
He added, “When my son came out I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents. And we love him ― EJ is amazing.”
Johnson also reminds parents that they can be their child’s first defense in a world of discrimination toward LGBTQ+ kids.
“You’ve got to support your child because there’s so many people who try to discriminate against them so they need you to support them because if you don’t support them, who is going to support them? And love them,” Johnson said.
