It’s been 50 years since the United Kingdom decriminalized homosexuality, and in honor of that, London Pride partnered with Youtubers Trent and Luke to feature a conversation between a gay youth and a gay man that are 65 years in age apart.
Percy is 78 years old, while Louis is 13 years old. The two share their experiences being gay in vastly different eras. Percy asks Louis about when he knew he was gay and how his experience has been at school with his classmates. Louis’ classmates are just as supportive towards him as his parents.
Percy reflects on his childhood and how he wouldn’t have told anyone he was gay.
“I think you’re so lucky the world has changed and you can be yourself,” Percy tells Louis.
Percy shares his coming out experience with Louis. He had a friend when he was younger who was also gay and the two went to a gay club together at 16 years old, and were excited to find that there were others who were also gay. He later shares how being gay was illegal during his lifetime. “You were never 100% at ease,” Percy said.
Percy shares some wise words with Louis in this video: “Be true to yourself. Stand up for being gay and for actually trying to make people understand that the most important thing is that you can love somebody and it doesn’t matter who they are. Whether it’s a boy or a girl, love is love, and that’s something which is enriching.”
“Try to get people to think beyond their own immediate sphere so that we can all be, I can’t think of a better word, neighbors in the world, and not be enemies,” he concluded.
