As my daughter Sophia grows older, there’s some new things that I, as a mother, have to talk to her about. Just the other day, as my wife and I were doing our morning routine of exfoliation and facial care with our new Spin for Perfect Skin, we discussed how we’re having to talk to Sophia about body care such as using deodorant or taking care of her skin.
But skin care and body changes isn’t the only thing that I’m concerned about when it comes to my daughter. My wife recently bought Sophia a copy of Seventeen Magazine, a magazine that is generally read by pre-teen and teen audiences. To be honest, I was a little nervous about the entire ordeal.
Seventeen, and other magazines like it, generally have a history of focusing on beauty, fashion, and dating articles and not always in ways that are positive for young girls. Yes, they do have informative articles for young women such as information on their changing bodies and such, but I do know they also sometimes lack diversity, share information that can be damaging to body positivity, or don’t focus enough on intelligence, strength, and going for your goals.
Just a few days after reading the magazine, I noticed my daughter asking to have her hair curled — something she generally doesn’t care about. So, yes, I’m a little nervous, and I’m sure many parents have had the same worries. If you have watched our latest vlog, I asked our viewers for advice — is it okay or when is it okay to let your daughter read teen magazines?
I got some very great responses. Many suggested that I sit with my daughter and read the magazine with her, pointing out the positive and negative aspects. I really love that suggestion, as it will allow an educational opportunity for my daughter — to see that magazines have their faults and their benefits. Plus, it gives us another chance to bond.
All I want for my daughter is to know that she’s beautiful — and I’m not talking about her physical appearance. I want her to know that she’s beautiful in her heart, for her mind, and her spirit, and it’s those things I want her to develop.
