Working in the technology field, I enjoy the latest cell phone, gadgets, and being the first to have the newest tech toys or software. This weekend I noticed a trend in the nursery — lots of baby gadgets! We really have a high-tech nursery started between making bottles, to iPod connected white-noise machines, to baby monitors with breathing sensors.
To start with, we purchased a high-tech baby monitor and a baby-cam. We bought an Angelcare monitor that is a baby monitor on steroids! There are two pads that go under the mattress of the crib. If the unit detects that the baby is not breathing, it will sound an alarm on the monitor. It also checks the room to make sure it’s not too cold or too warm and displays the temperature on the parent’s monitors that clip to our belt. In addition to the high-tech features, it also is a regular baby monitor and lets us hear if the baby is crying. Justin shook his head when I showed it to him – after ten years with me he knows it will make me happy to have my gadgets. We tested it out by sliding the sensors under the rug where the dog was sleeping. Sure enough, when the dog got up and did not sense breathing anymore, the alarm went off!
But Justin really shook his head one day when I came home with a Baby Brezza Formula Pro. I had been eyeing it for about a month and finally picked it up. For those who have not seen this, it’s a machine that makes a perfect bottle every time. Basically it stores formula on the top of the unit and water on the side. We just need to place a sterilized bottle under the dispenser and press the number of ounces we want. The machine buzzes and out comes perfectly mixed formula at just the right temperature! It’s been a bit of a conversational piece in out kitchen as most of our friends have not seen one before. But I think most agree it will come in handy when we are holding our baby at night and trying to make a bottle with one arm free.
All of these devices are fun and will either offer us piece of mind or a little convenience when our life becomes hectic. But no matter what gadget this daddy picks up, it will still be the simple things like reading before bed together or a huge hug and an “I love you daddy” that will mean the most to us.
