TNF: Tell me about your family.
Valerie: Amy and I married “legally” in New Jersey 12/31/13 but had a lovely renewal/celebration in our home state of PA on May 17, 2014 only days before it was legally recognized! We celebrated on our honeymoon 🙂
We have one amazing son, Grayson (6yo) and are currently TTC with a fertility specialist. We hope to know by end of the week if we will be able to give Grayson the brother or sister he’s been asking for 🙂
TNF: How did you meet your wife?
Valerie: Our tale is like many… we met at work. But interesting, such a small world, we “knew of each other” through exes and friends. After working at our employer for a year the opportunity and my courage finally aligned and I introduced myself something like… “by the way I know you…” The rest is history.
TNF: Do you feel different from other families? If so, how so?
Valerie: No (but maybe a little). We have a similar history, the basics are the same, we want a family like many, we struggle and sometimes argue like any couple, BUT our journey to those ideals is different and sometimes more rocky than other families.
TNF: Where do you live? Is it tough being a gay couple where you live?
Valerie: We live a small suburb of Allentown, PA. Generally the Lehigh Valley is diverse and in many pockets more accepting but we live within a small school district with limited diversity so we are one of a small handful of “alternative” families. Fortunately we are blessed to have had a good experience thus far with every new family we meet, especially for our son’s sake.
We also started with a few other local families a group called Lehigh Valley Family OUTings so that we can get together with other LGBT families and this has been excellent.
TNF: What has having a family meant to you?
Valerie: There is no greater joy than a loving and supportive spouse and a son that never ceases to amaze us! We are so blessed to have found each other. So much of life is better enjoyed with loved ones.
Thank you Valerie and Amy for sharing your family story. We are thinking good thoughts for #2!
