Michelle and Rochie
TNF: Tell me about your family. Are you married? Do you have kids?
MICHELLE: We are married! Rochie (a combo of Rochelle and her last name Ouchi!) & I got married in Malibu on New Years Eve day 2013. We had always talked about getting married and having a big wedding but then we got pregnant really quickly – it took on the first time! We felt it was really important to make our relationship legalized for the safety & protection of our baby. And Rochie didn’t want to be pregnant at our wedding so we did something very small and private. We had our friend Kerry get ordained and she married us on the beach at Paradise Cove with her husband Adam and her two kids Rome & Zsolt as our witnesses. It was really perfect for us but we would love to have a celebration and include our family and friends. We planned our marriage at the last minute on a trip to California – it wasn’t yet legal in Illinois – and we wanted to keep it simple and get it done. Our family & friends have always been so supportive and it was hard to not have them be there.
We have one perfect son – Brody Falcon Ouchi Barnard! He was born July 25th 2014 – on his due date!
TNF: How did you meet your wife?
MICHELLE: Rochie and I met 10 years ago at a bar in Hollywood,CA called The Falcon (we gave our son Falcon as his middle name because of it!) It was a premiere party for the second season of The L Word. We hung out all the night and that was it for us – with the exception of a few hiccups;) I pretty much knew right from the start that she was the one!
MICHELLE: We don’t feel different from other families. The only thing I can think of is after we found out Rochie was pregnant, we felt almost stronger as a gay couple. We know that we can’t allow any negativity about us being gay in our lives because we just won’t have it for our son.
TNF: Where do you live? Is it tough being a gay couple where you live? Do you feel accepted?
MICHELLE: We are currently living in Chicago. We moved from Los Angeles to Chicago a year ago for my job. I had been living in L.A. for 10 years and Rochelle about the same – she also went to UCLA. Rochelle is from Northern Cal & I actually grew up in a suburb of Chicago. It was a tough move. We had our life and friends in L.A. but it was something we had to do and look how it turned out! We got our baby here:) We really haven’t had any negative situations because we are gay in Chicago – thankfully. We do feel accepted.
TNF: What has having a family meant to you?
MICHELLE: We had our little family before Brody – he does have two furry cat sisters Lilly & Romy:) but having a family means being able to share the love we have for each other with our son Brody. We are so excited to be able to teach him to be a kind, generous, caring, and fun human being!
Thanks Michelle and Rochie for sharing your beautiful family with us and congratulations on that sweet precious new addition to your family!
