A dad’s Facebook video has been shared over 188,000 times and you’ll never guess why. Mikki Willis recently took his son to the store to exchange a birthday present he received (he got two of the same thing). When allowing his son to choose a toy that he didn’t have, his son chose Ariel, the Little Mermaid, as the toy he wanted.
Gender stereotyping has been a hot topic in the news lately. Recently, Target decided to remove its gender-based signs from its kid’s departments as a way to encourage kids to play with whatever toys they liked. Also, psychologists have come out and said that gender-specific toys can harm a child’s development. This though process is also making its way into real families and the way parents raise their children.
So after showing viewers what his son chose, and with his son blushing in the background, Willis says, “Now how do you think a dad feels when his son wants to get this?” In response his son yells, “Yah!” which is immediately followed by Willis yelling the same thing.
“I let my boys choose their life. That’s how mama and I—that’s how we are.”
“Choose your expression, choose what you’re into, choose your sexuality, choose whatever. You have my promise right now…You have my promise forever to love you and accept you no matter what life you choose.”
Father and son end the video with enthusiastic yells and we now find our hearts have melted into happy puddles at our feet.
