Linda Perry and Sara Gilbert are part of a two-mom band that just created and released a children’s album with the help of their children. You may know Sara Gilbert as co-host and creator on The Talk and a long standing cast member on Roseanne and The Big Bang Theory. Her wife Linda Perry is a big name in the music world. Linda was a member of 4 Non Blondes and had a solo career, but she is also well-known for her songwriting (2015 Songwriters Hall of Fame recipient) and production of major hits for Pink (Get the Party Started), Christina Aguilera (Beautiful), Adam Lambert, Brittney Spears, Alicia Keys, and more.
Known as Deer Sounds, the album was created by the family for the enjoyment of parents and children alike.
“The songs started showing up when our son Rhodes was born,” said Perry. Rhodes is the first child of the couple who recently married in 2014. “I would hold him and sing. I started to record the songs with my iPhone thinking, ‘hmm this might turn into something.’ When I played some of the songs on piano we all felt there was a children’s album in the making. So we teamed up and started what was the beginning of Deer Sounds.”
Wife, Gilbert, added: “We just wanted to do something fun that the whole family could be a part of. The intention behind Deer Sounds was sweet, innocent and organic. Creating for kids, with kids, as kids. How can you go wrong?”
The album is made up of ten songs and they’ve even released a music video of “Wake Up, Wake Up, Wake Up” which includes toys and puppets. The vocals feature the entire family, even baby Rhodes! Rhodes’ heartbeat from an ultrasound is on one of the tracks, as is his foot stomping.
Perry said, “I put him on the piano and he just started, his little feet started going, and he starts making his noise and I was recording it, and we just started laughing. It was perfect. So we go, ‘OK, well, that’s obviously going on the album.'”
For parents who are worried that this is another children’s album with music that will annoy you after the fifth time being played in the car—don’t worry, it’s not! Many of these songs are just as relatable to parents as they are interesting (and appropriate) for children, particularly “He + She.”
“I wanted to do something the parents would like, since they’re going to be the ones listening to it over and over,” Perry said in an interview with Us Weekly.
This album is a fun and inspiring compilation of songs that will resonate with every type of family. And who knows? It may just inspire you and your family to make your own children’s album!
For those interested in checking out the album, you can listen to it for free on Spotify through their Deer Sounds website or you can buy a limited edition CD signed by both Linda Perry and Sara Gilbert. They are also promoting the songs and other information about their band through their Pinterest page. Happy listening!
