This last Sunday, Bravo debuted Season 3 of Newlyweds: The First Year with a gay Mormon couple from Utah. Brandon Liberati and Craig Ramsay is one of the featured couples of the show. They’ve been together for four years, and at the beginning of the show, they’ve just been married.
Liberati and Ramsay’s main reasoning for being part of the show had to do with the marriage equality ruling.
“One of the main reasons we did this was for marriage equality—to actually show people who had fear about the [Supreme Court] decision that we’re actually no different than any other married couple,” Liberati said.
Their second reason was to shine a light on the injustices of LGBT people in the Mormon church. Liberati grew up in a strict Mormon household which helped him form a thick skin to adversity in the world.
“Everyone knows that being gay in Utah is still quite a struggle, even though marriage is legal now. We really give people outside of Utah a look at the struggle that the gay community goes through inside the state,” he noted.
Different aspects of the couple’s lives will be displayed during the season, such as trying to start a family together.
Ramsay explained, “We have to create our families. And it’s done in such a loving way. Hopefully, it’s going to resonate — especially with people in Salt Lake City — that we have really strong family values.”
Having an LGBT couple on a reality show like this will be wonderful for the reasons that Ramsay and Liberati said. It’s important for the U.S. (and the world) to see that newlywed couples from the LGBT community have the same struggles and moments of happiness as any other type of couple. Furthermore, it will reach thousands of viewers who may or may not have been comfortable with the marriage equality ruling and will provide an insight into the LGBT community that they never had before.
Lastly, and most important of all, we look forward to seeing those moments in which Liberati and Ramsay discuss creating their family on the show. With the marriage equality ruling, more LGBT families are becoming visible, but it still doesn’t erase the fact that there are many laws that harm LGBT families such as those that deal with birth certificates. Perhaps by showing the world the struggle and commitment that LGBT couples face when it comes to making their family, the world will respect, welcome, and stand up for their rights too.
