Dolce and Gabbana are in the news again and it’s for a reason you might not expect from the Italian designers.
In March 2015 during an interview with the magazine Panorama, the duo made some anti-same-sex family statements that had people confused and very angry. They stated in the interview that children born through IVF are “children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”
Dolce even added, ““I am gay, I cannot have a child. I guess you cannot have everything in life. Life has a natural course, some things cannot be changed. One is the family.”
Of course, the designers received a huge backlash from the LGBT community and families all across the world for their negative statements and antiquated views of family. Many people boycotted the brand in response to their statements.
However, Dolce and Gabbana have done something with their clothing line that has people wondering if maybe their views have changed in regards to same-sex parents and LGBT families. They’ve released a line of shirts and bags featuring same-sex couples and their children. Many of the cartoonish same-sex families also feature interracial relationships and transracial adoptions. Gabbana posted photos of the new line on Instagram with the hashtag #DGfamily.
A spokesperson at Dolce and Gabbana stated that the designers will not comment on the reasoning behind the line’s release, which should be in stores soon. Still the release of such a line by these two famous Italian designers comes at a very important time in Italy where the legalization of same-sex civil unions and gay adoption are currently under consideration in the government.
