Focus Features released the first trailer of Loving, a film that documents the story of the Loving family who fought for the right for people of different races to marry.
This clip is especially moving as we witness others try to strip away Richard and Mildred Loving’s right to be together, to be married, and to have a family. Both Richard and Mildred are arrested and harassed by police officers in this clip, and are subjected to negative comments and looks by their community — simply for their love. But as the trailer says, “Some love can change the world.”
It’s with great satisfaction that we know the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Richard and Mildred Loving in the famous case of Loving v. Virginia which allowed interracial marriage across the United States. However, what will makes this film truly inspiring is that we get to witness the struggles and celebrations of a family that made American history 50 years ago.
For many, Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage, is an echo of the Loving v. Virginia court case, as both gave people in the U.S. the right to love and the right to have a family.
Try not to cry when Richard Loving is asked: “Is there anything you’d like me to say to the Supreme Court justices of the United States?”
“Yeah. Tell the judge I love my wife.” — Richard. Because love is that simple.
