In addition to researching the best way to create their family, LGBT prospective parents also tend to look for insight and resources that explain how it is for children growing up with LGBT parents. On a new episode of “Inside the Closet with Jen and Niki” on YouTube’s Buzzfeed Yellow Channel, Jen invites a friend — Nyla — on the show to explain what it was like for her to be raised by a gay parent.
Nyla grew up with a gay father who came out to her when she was in the 3rd grade. Nyla explains that she went to a progressive school that discussed Pride and LGBT history, and she started noticing that her father was involved with another man.
“I said to my dad, I really want to know the real reason why you two sleep in the same bed?” Nyla asked her father as a child, and he told her he was gay.
“So I started crying, not because I was hurt that he was gay, but because he lied to me!” She adds. “Like why’d you lie? You could have just told me what was going on and how you were feeling and what you were going through. I went to a school that had gay families!”
“It’s been heaven ever since,” Nyla says with a smile.
Jen points out, “Like him not telling you had more to do with his journey, because you were clearly like, ‘Okay, he’s gay!'”
When Nyla’s father came out to her, she was living with a family that were lesbians. “You had a big queer happy family growing up,” Jen notes.
“Do you feel like you’re a part of the queer community?” Jen asks Nyla. Nyla says yes, but tries to find the best place within the community. As an ally, she like to determine when’s the best time to use her voice and when is the best time to just listen.
