The UN Human Rights Office has released a short film that raises awareness of intersex individuals and it’s beyond moving.
The ad features a loving family, two parents and a daughter who are awaiting the birth of a new family member. On the day of the new baby’s birth, the father learns that the child is intersex, which means that the baby was “born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the standard definitions of female or male.” According to the video, 1.7% of all babies are born intersex.
Shape History created the film and Executive Director, Mike Buonaiuto, shared some words:
“This is an historic moment for the United Nations and for equal rights. Intersex people have long been forgotten along our global path to equality, with many intersex people suffering due to ignorances that have transcended generations. It’s incredible to think that being intersex is as common as being a redhead, this campaign really puts it into perspective.”
The message of the video is clear — intersex babies deserve familial love just as anyone else and “They are perfect just as they are.”
