This Wednesday was IDAHOT, International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. As we all know, days like IDAHOT are very important to the LGBT community. Though we’ve made a lot of strides in the past 20 years for LGBT rights, we still have a long way to go as there are still states in the U.S. trying to roll back the rights of LGBT Americans and countries around the world that criminalize people for who they love.
In our newest Youtube video, we talk a little bit about IDAHOT and things do get a little silly between my wife and I, but trust us, we know the significance of days like IDAHOT. Though we live in California — a pretty liberal state in terms of LGBT rights — we know our family, the love that I and my wife have for each other, isn’t accepted by all and that there are many in our community — friends, families, and even our Youtube audiences — that have experienced hate from others. So we celebrate IDAHOT and continue to fight against hate with love (and silliness of course!).
But with IDAHOT comes the realization that Pride is just around the corner — less than a few weeks, in fact! We are so excited for Pride this year that our dog Bailey is already rocking the rainbow colors! Out and proud as Susan says!
So as we continue these 30 days of vlogging, which will roll over into Pride Month, I can honestly say that I have a lot to be thankful for this Pride. I have a beautiful wife and three amazing kids and we have a fantastic following on Youtube. But even better than all of that, Pride reminds me that there were so many people who fought for me and my family to have the opportunity to share our lives as a family with the world and hopefully provide a safe place of hope, inspiration, and information for young and old LGBT people on The Next Family.
