German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced earlier this week that she favored a vote on same-sex marriage, a surprising statement to some as Merkel had always stood for marriage between a man and a woman as she claimed it was in the “best interest” of children.
Many in Germany were pressuring Merkel to change her stance to favor same-sex marriage, but she always stood against it. However, it seems that meeting a lesbian couple who fosters eight children changed Merkel’s mind.
“I had a life-changing experience in my home constituency,” Merkel said at the Brigitte event according to the LA Times.
Merkel saw the great care the lesbian foster mothers were providing to the foster children and it seemed to have changed her heart.
“If the youth welfare service entrusts a lesbian couple with eight foster children, then the state could no longer use child welfare as an argument against adoptions,” Merkel said.
Absolutely, Chancellor Merkel, absolutely.
