NextDayBetter, a storytelling platform for multicultural communities, recently shared a powerful Youtube video of two Asian mothers sharing some wise advice for other parents with LGBT kids.
At the beginning, we hear Miki tell her coming out story while her mother Aya listens. Miki’s coming out was made a lot easier by her mother’s acceptance. Aya was told that being gay was okay by her own parents. Miki shares how her mother helped her navigate coming out to her Asian family members and the wonderful experience it was to have her mom’s support.
Aya shares some wise advice to other parents of LGBT kids. She poses the question, “So when you have to choose a child or your culture or religion, what is more valuable to you?”
Her answer is truly wonderful: “I would choose my daughter over my culture or religion. I can change culture or religion… if I need to. But I can’t change my daughter. ”
Aya is later echoed in the video by Clara Yoon, a mother of a transgender bisexual son.
“My son found his happiness in being who he is and I found mine for being a good mother for my son with unconditional love.”
