We recently shared an article on social media congratulating Aaron Carter on coming out as bisexual. Unfortunately, the article received a not-so great comment and it sparked my wife and I to have a conversation on bisexuality and the discrimination that bisexuals often face within and outside of the LGBT community.
Here’s the thing that my wife and I seemed to settle on: For those who identify as being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, listen up. Whether you are the “L” the “G” or the “B” or the “T” or the “Q+” you don’t deserve to be discriminated against. You deserve to love who wish to love. And you don’t deserve the struggle that sometimes your peers put you through. Better yet, you deserve support and acceptance, and we stand by ALL of you.
Now, I know for some, bisexuality just doesn’t make sense for you. And that’s okay — but don’t allow yourself to remain ignorant. Educate yourself. Find bisexual people, connect with them on a human level, and realize that human sexuality isn’t just always how you wish to see it. It’s complex. You know what, bisexual people have just as much right to love who they wish to love as I do to love my wife– without dealing with hate or ignorant comments. It’s that simple.
