Dia De Los Muertos at Grand Park
October 26, 2015 @ 9:00 am - November 2, 2015 @ 6:00 pmFree
Grand Park expands the celebration and traditions of Día de los Muertos with multiple ways to experience and learn about the holiday, all for free. At the center of the festivities is the park’s presentation of more than 40 altars and art installations in honor of Día de los Muertos in partnership with Self-Help Graphics & Art. The altars, which remain in the park all week long, will focus on both traditional and contemporary topics and explore the connections between the holiday’s origins and the daily lives of Angelenos. Altar subjects range from personal stories that celebrate families and lost loved ones, to more contemporary expressions of current affairs and community challenges, such as gang violence, immigration reform and education.
The park will also feature Día de los Muertos-themed sculptures, curated by Lore Productions and created by 30 Southern California artists whose work will explore different time periods in the celebration of the holiday, illustrating its evolution over time. The artists will be creating a Catrin/Catrina sculpture representing 19th/early 20th century perspectives of Día de los Muertos; a double-headed serpent indicative of the day’s indigenous roots; and two- and three-dimensional skulls that represent personal connections with the celebration.
TOURS: Park guests can take 20 minute lunchtime tours MON OCT 26 thru FRI OCT 30 and finally on MON NOV 2, which will highlight the artwork and discuss the traditions of Día de los Muertos. Tours will begin at 12:15pm and will meet in Grand Park between Hill and Broadway (adjacent to the Metro RED/PURPLE line station).
