LGBTQ Childbirth Education Class

November 2, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Lavender Labor and Birth Services and the Los Angeles LGBT Center are proud to offer the first and only LGBTQ Childbirth Education Classes in Los Angeles. These evidence-based classes provide a safe, supportive, and affirming environment for queer couples entering parenthood.

Lavender Labor childbirth education classes promote birth as a normal, physiological process and that people have a fundamental right to understand all of their choices in childbirth. Because birth and people are unique, these classes do not promote a specific method to birth but rather, offer a wide variety of options so the pregnant person and partner may decide what is best for their birth experience. LGBTQ childbirth education classes will address the pregnant body in the third trimester, the anatomy and physiology of birth, the stages and phases of labor, pain coping techniques, understanding medical procedures and interventions, cesarean birth and prevention, the non-gestational parent’s role, and the immediate postpartum. Basic newborn care and breastfeeding/chestfeeding information will be woven throughout the course, as well. Classes are open to people choosing to birth at home, in a birth center, or at a hospital and will address the circumstances around each environment. Resources and references to inclusive perinatal service providers will be given to students. It is the goal of these classes to address not only the many factors of pregnancy and birth but to also provide a space in which there is a sensitivity and celebration of gender identities, gender expressions, and family frameworks.

Prior to relocating to Los Angeles, Samantha Hillstrom, certified birth doula, certified cooperative childbirth educator and founder of Lavender Labor and Birth Services, created the first and only LGBTQ childbirth education classes in New York City. She is excited to bring this much-needed class to the queer families of Los Angeles. As an active childbirth educator, Samantha noticed the traditional curriculum of childbirth education classes simply did not cover some very important aspects of pregnancy, birth and the immediate postpartum for LGBTQ people. “The birth process is incredibly layered and even more so for LGBTQ families,” Hillstrom said. “With more and more queer couples having babies, I am thrilled to be partnering with the Los Angeles LGBT Center to offer an alternative in childbirth education.”
